Who the F*?
INTRO
Bastian Grübl is a Director of Photography based in the Pongau region of Salzburg. He cares less about clean images and more about images that make you feel something. Texture, atmosphere and presence matter more to him than technical perfection.
FRICTION
Ironically, his approach is extremely precise, almost obsessive. Sets are planned, light is shaped, details are controlled. Yet what draws him to film are exactly the things he can’t fully control: light leaks, lens distortions, scratches, dust, grain. The flaws — proof that an image existed in the real world and not only inside a computer. Somewhere between intention and accident is where his visual language lives.
IMPACT
Working from a rural region with far more creative potential than it often gives itself credit for, he is interested in shifting how film is approached locally. Less stiffness, less disposable content, less “just make a video”. More atmosphere, more identity, more images people actually remember. Film shouldn’t decorate something. It should leave a mark.
COLLECTIVE
He is deeply interested in bringing people together — not as a network, but as a circle. People who want to learn, push each other and genuinely enjoy making stuff. The process matters as much as the result.
OBSERVATION
His photography is the opposite of his film work. Film sets are structured and controlled; street photography is instinct. No staging, no second takes, no safety net — only observation and timing. Moments happen once and disappear again. Imperfect, unpredictable and human.
NOTE
This website is a personal collection of cinematography and analog photography. It’s not meant to please everyone. But if it resonates, you’ll probably know why.
If this Resonates - let’s talk!
